Hunting in/near Talladega National Forest

My son wants to go camping for his birthday so we will be at Desoto Caverns on opening week of turkey season. It’s only 15 mins or so from Talladega national Forest near Talldega and Slyacauga. Has anyone ever Turkey hunted in the national forest or on any public land around that area? Any tips would be appreciated. I can’t go the whole week without trying a bird somewhere.

Great habitat with a good population of birds. It can be a bit hilly but you can use that to your advantage. Expect to see other hunters just like on any public land. Hope yawl do well and have fun!

You'll need a map with road closures. They don't gate the closed roads but have a map with them marked. The maps are available at the nfs office down near Heflin. Expect to get checked by the gw they are very active down there.
