White oaks and squirrels

I saw a squirrel peeling the bark off of a white oak tree. Can anyone tell me why? The squirrel didn't take the bark for anything right then, and I've noticed a lot of white oaks with the bark lying on the ground around them. Have'nt seen nests in the trees but my only guess is for protection from snakes and predators or some food for later.

They do that to the white oaks in my yard - another thing they do is bite off the little ends of the branches that have four or five leaves attached to it - can't figure that out either.

Pretty sure they use those to line their nests. I've watched squirrels in our trees cut those, and carry them to a nest.
