My son is temporarily disabled and has lots of time on his hands for tv and such. I did a subscription to Netflix to allow him to watch movies online with his computer or TV. I also did the deal where I can get DVDs by mail.

They have a great selection of historical material available on DVD. I have watched several good documentaries related to the Civil War and have many others reserved on my que list for future viewing. All this for $10.69 per month. Unlimited movies by both methods. All I have to do is go to the mailbox for my DVDs. Turn around from the time I mail a movie back until I recieve the next one is only 3-4 days.

Just an FYI for any of you who like watching movies of any type.

You do know that the more movies you watch the slower Netflix gets, don't you.

::ke:

When Netflix first hit the market, before streaming, they had plans at different levels. Basic, Premium, SuperPremium, and so on.

Of course the hook was the basic plan, $9.99 a month, and watch all you the movies you want.

Netflix got caught, and admitted to doing it -- naturally, because it was so new, a lot of people were hammering the $9.99 a month plan. Get a movie, watch it, send it right off, get another. That wasn't exactly Netflix business model. :p

So they had a program in place that if you had the basic plan, and followed that pattern, as you ordered more movies, the response time slowed down, especially on new releases. So even though you had "unlimited" movies, the Netflix computers were set up so that you could only order so many a month. The goal was to prod you into upgrading your plan -- mo' money, mo' money.

Anyway there was a little stir about it, and I think the outcome was that Netflix includes in its fine print that "unlmited" doesn't really mean unlimited. I think the whole streaming thing has probably made it a non-issue.

I use it and love it. The best thing is that I dumped satellite and have all the entertainment I want for one cheap price. Word is that Netflix is going to move away from dvd's and to instant viewing; which makes business sense to me.

Netflixs

you can't beat the price....

I do wish they had more new releases on instant watch, but I know in time they will...

I just signed up on my sons x-box the other night and we really like it.The only problem I have is that a lot of the newer movies are dvd only.Other than that it seems great.

One thing that is worth a mention: watch Netflix and your kids. There is some stuff available on their that could be considered soft porn and I don't see any parental controls on there.

We purchased a Wii for Christmas and signed up for Netficks as well. Love it! I have really injoyed documentaries and tv shows without commercials! Even though Pay-per-view seems to still have the corner marketed on new releases, I reached my breaking point paying 5 bucks to watch a movie that they take back in 24 hours.

I enjoyed it while I had it. I canceled it because we stopped using it as much as we had been.

I was fortunate to have a distribution center not far from my house so our turnaround time was never more than 2 days....1 day to send it back, 1 day to get a new one returned to me.

Haven't tried the instant streaming version yet.

When I did have it I watched a lot of WW2 movies...I'm a sucker for old war movies.

Since this is the "interesting facts" forum, I thought I'd point out that I read an article a few weeks ago where Netflix's higher ups actually met with Blockbuster executives years ago in attempt to get them to co-brand with them.....to have Blockbuster be the in-store option but folks could signup for the mail service at the store. The article said that Blockbuster execs basically laughed the Netflix guys out of the building.

Wonder how that ended up working out for them :)
