Rebarrel 22-250 suggestions

I am wanting a caliber that shoots around 120-145 grain bullet. I want it to be a screamer, like the 22-250. (don't much care about barrel life).

I want it fit in the donor gun action, browing a bolt 22-250.

I don't care if the bullet are not stocked at a big box retailer, as long as I can order the round from a reputable manufacturer, ie Hornady.

I would be happy with a 243 if it will fit in this action.

Thanks for the ideas.

Good Luck!

The .22-250 is quick!

With your bullet choice of 120-145 grain there isn't a short action cartridge that sets any speed records.

.260, 7mm-08 or .308 are all great cartridges. Just not speed demons.

I'd suggest the 6.5/.284 if you're fine with 120-140gr. You should see 3100+ with 120s and I believe there are both Partitions and Accubonds at 120gr. I used to own the very similar 6.5RM, but finding ammo was a constant struggle.

I hand load 140 gr. TTSX for it and its plety fast
My 22-250 is fast and I load 50 gr. TSX and that will kill any thing I GA. Comes out about 3,600 fps

.284 Win. is a fast round with 120 gr. bullets.
Looks like just under 3000 f/s.
Case length is only a bit longer than the .22-250 case.

I like the .243 Win as a short-action non-magnum high velocity varmint or medium-game round.
But... it’s only a “screamer” with 55 to 65gr. loads.

If you change the bolt head to a magnum type ...

The .270 Winchester Short Magnum will move a 110 grain bullet up to about 3400 fps .... Barnes data shows 3575 fps for the Tsx
110 grain

If you don't mind lighter weight .... A TTSX 95 grain @3765 fps

A TSX 85 grain @ 3948 fps ....

That is about as "Swift" as it gets .... In a short action ...

But Wait ! there is always the .300 WSM ...110 grain TtSx @ 3880 fps !!!

I have loaded and shot the .300 WSM load ...seen what a mess it does to a deer too... Out of a Browning Xbolt. a bolt head is $33 at Midway

I found a NIB M77 in .284 about 6-7 years ago for a really good price and snatched it up immediately. However, I failed to lay in an adequate amount of ammo and brass for it and it became impossible to find any for it, so I sold it.

A few years before that, I was looking for a nice donor rifle to build a 6.5/.284 with and came across a NIB M673 in 6.5RM and grabbed it instead (they are, for all intents and purposes, ballistic twins). Ammo for it is worse than problematic, so off it went too....lol.

The irony? I shouldda just bought/built the 6.5/.284 way back when....lol. I have also picked up, along the way, a .270WSM with fluted medium contour barrel and laminate stock (ala M673) on a Model Seven action.

As said above, there are NO flies on the .270WSM and lighter weight bullets. It's fast, very fast. Having sold all my 6.5s along the way, I may still scratch that itch again sometime soon by buying/building a 6.5/.284 just because.....

The 243 will fit in that action but a 100 grain bullet is about as heavy as you will shoot. From your criteria listed, I would go with one of the short action 6.5mm chamberings such as a 6.5 creedmoor or a .260, both of which you shouldn't have trouble finding ammo for.
