I finally got the hang of the fire roll with cotton ball and wood ashes after watching many videos. I was getting smoke several times prior and didn't realize that means ignition! All I had to do was gently pull the roll apart to let oxygen in, and you have an ember. This is not a hard technique to learn. David West channel on Youtube has a bunch of fire roll videos.
