What kind of fish is this?

A friend of mine caught this tiny fish while fly fishing on the Linville River in North Carolina last weekend. I've never seen one like it. Can anyone identify it?

Many thanks.

Yep. They are extremely common here in the mountains, and hit flies readily.

I used to catch one of those ever once in a while, back when I fished the Linville River. I had no idea what they were.

I bet that war paint shiner, properly hooked and drifted through a deep hole in a bend of the Toccoa, Tuck or Oconaluftee rivers during or just after a sizable rain, might be just the right ticket for a 2 foot long, hook jawed brownie.
