Markings in the woods

Found these while chasing turkeys on public land. There were three separate areas all about 50 yards apart. Each were surrounded by the tags on the trees and contained two wooden frames and PVC pipe like in the photos and a few orange stake flags. There were also two old blue tarps buried under leaf litter at two of the areas.

Everything appeared to have been there a while. Any idea what was being marked?

Also, unrelated to those, were areas that were marked as if they were being cut. The areas were marked with flagging tape, but instead of the normal blue paint, there were trees with these orange markings.

Where these on a fire road or other vehicle accessible trail? The pipe looks like a monitoring well or piezometer.

The first one was less than 100 yards from the road along a creek, with the next two about 50 yards further down the creek.

The UGA school of forestry used to have all sorts of odd stuff all over BFG WMA. Much of it was experimental stuff
