Is this a Stave??

This is a Hickory that I am about to cut down the smaller fork. Seems straight and only has one limb coming out of it. It has one other knot in it. It is approx 12" in diam.

Would this make a bow and if so what should I do when I fire up the chain saw??

The smaller fork is the one I am cutting down....

Id say no. Look at the twisted grain pattern.

I tend to agree but hickory is very forgiving ....

if your cutting it out anyway try it ....

It's not as straight as some, but I bet there's a bow or 2 in there. Once it hits the ground, look at the end and if you see a crack, start your wedge there. It'll go where it wants to, but then you'll be able to get some smaller splits and some of them may be pretty good. The bark will pull off the staves easily. Coat the ends with shellac or glue. I do the back with shellac too, but some say it's not nessesary. Spray it with bug killer and let em dry.
