Did a little fishing at the new DH section at fires creek in clay county nc, the only thing I could get them to eat was an egg pattern, (y2k) , water is so clear most would just dart at my fly, but wouldn't hit, I did manage to land a few, but really slow,View attachment 817205

Try zebra midge dropped below an indicator fly. I fish Fires a lot. Got a place on the Hiwassee bout a mile from there. The upper waters will be most productive. Past the falls and drop down into the gorge. Above the forks fishes well too in the winter.

I tried that exact thing, I've fished FC all my life, just never in the winter much, I used to live 50 yards from the creek. Was just think that the really, really clear water was getting me, I could see fish dart at my fly, but would turn away at the last second, was using 5 x tippet, might try smaller next time I go. And wear camo.
