I've been pretty fortunate the past three weeks with nice weather and plenty of free time... No better way to spend it IMO than getting out and going fishing.
Recently I've been trying my hand at tying streamers. I had some left over crystal streamer hair that I used to tie jigs for ice season so I tied up a few basic streamers.
Weekend before last, I got the itch to go try them out so me and my girl headed to one of my favorite spots (scenery wise, the fishing is hit and miss). I managed a pretty decent Brown on one of the streamers, and had a few misses as well. My girl caught a nice lil brown on a panther martin then a nice rainbow drifting a salmon egg. Overall it was a nice day to be out and about. While fishing, I noticed an abundance of fairly large carp, but more on that later...
Last weekend, I decided to take a nice solo trip and explore a new stream. Still wanting to improve my streamer fishing, I limited myself to the few I'd tied previously and a nice olive wolly bugger tied by EverGreen1231 for the last fly swap. Lost all my streamers on breakoffs and tree limbs, but the olive wolly bugger picked up the slack! Caught over 35 rainbow, browns, and brookies! Ill definitely remember this spot!
This weekend, I decide to take some kayaks out to the spot where I found those big carp and try out a few leech streamers I tied up on them. I wasn't expecting much, just figured Id keep myself entertained while kayaking with my girl. Turned out they couldn't resist the leech, and I managed a couple of really nice ones! not sure I would have been able to land them with my 5wt rod and 5x leaders, had I not been in a kayak. They pulled me all over that place and it took prolly 20 minutes to land them! What a thrill! Finished off the day with a few decent rainbows on a copper john.
