Hey Fishunt - You are correct on your son's snake in my opinion - eastern ratsnake. The ratsnakes (genus Pantherophis) are related to bull/gopher/pine snakes (genus Pituophis) and do look kinda similar.

That's part of his bluff. Not a true wedge head, and his eyes have round pupils.
Yep, the snake your son is holding is an intergrade between a black and gray color-phase rat snake.
