I approve this message....

Maybe this belongs in the political forum, if so, that's fine to move. Most all the political ads I see on TV lately usually have the candidates making their comments and the last thing they say is " I'm so and so and I approve this message." Now I could understand if a second or third party were presenting the message and then the candidate chimes in with that reamark, but really, when the candidate themselves are the ones making the statements, isn't it OBVIOUS that they approve the message or they wouldn't be there saying it in the first place? I can understand disclaimers for persons other than the candidates but I just don't get it. Help, someone please explain this to me.

It's the law. They have to say that, even though it is pretty obvious that they approved it. They just want it to be very clear that the candidate is, in fact culpable or accountable regarding what is conveyed by his campaign.

Funny law, I know.
