5 mile blood trail
Well as I sit here and type with one hand, I am waiting for the clininc to open for a few not so well deserved stiches.
I was supposed to meet a couple of Marines this morning for a bow hunt on the base nearby. I missed the alarm and was running late. Anyway, I figured instead of getting dressed in my hunting gear in the dark, I would do it at the sign in shack instead to utilize the light and make up lost time. I keep everything I hunt with in a water tight rubber duffel bag from Cabellas. I started by dumping it all out on the ground and then putting back everything I didn't need including my big skinning knife/caping/saw knife in its leather sheath back in the bag and all the other gear on top.
I huridly threw it in the back seat of my truck and felt something tear at the lower pad of my left hand .
The small caping (sharp as a razor) knife had apparently fallen out of the sheath and punctured the duffel when I shoved all the gear back to close the bag.
Upon inspection of my hand I found a 3" lasceration about 1/2" deep pouring blood. I got a McD's napkin off the seat of the truck and luckily found a roll of ducktape sitting on the bench at the sign in station and taped it up.
Proceded to scribble my name off the chart when i figured that there was too much blood to continue the hunt. Left my DNA all over the place and then procede to bleed the 5 miles all the way home. Heck of a mess to be cleaned up.
Since the Clinic doesn't open until 9 on saturdays, I woke my lovely wife and had her wrap it better, then picked up my rifle and walked to our pond for a little sit hoping for the most unlucky deer ever to walk out on this can't wait til it's over morning. Time to go. pictures later.
Big (and feelig stupid)Jim

Big Jim, don't feel stupid. All sorts of accidents happen with regards to hunting; from the smallest to largest. I hope your going to be okay.....maybe your morning wasn't off to a good start but hopefully the ending will be a happy one!
Good luck!

Big Jim, accidents happen. Plain and simple.
Anytime you like to play with sharp and pointy things, an accident will happen from time to time.

i'm back and bleeding a lot less now. Seven stitches in my hand and 14 stiches in my wallet. The wallet is still bleeding.
have decided to not post the pictures since they edited my post (edit), they probably wouldn't like the pictures of my hand or the pools of blood in my truck that give the impression that someone shot the driver. Anyway you get the picture. Lots of blood- lots of profanity and at least 2 or 3 days without shooting a bow. Fun Fun.

MAN!! I hate anything to do with cuts!!
Sorry to read.
I don't imagine anything with blood is going to be edited, especially since we can show deer pictures with blood.
Hope you heal quickly.
God Bless,
David B.

Appreciate it all. Made a mistake and told him no pain meds either. Man what am I thinking. Really not to bad, but I expect i'll be laying awake a good bit tonight.
Been working in the bow shop since and it is slowing me up a bit, but still manageable.
One of my roofing customers invited my wife and I to hunt at there place tomorrow. There only about 45 min. away. Both going to use the bangstick. hopefully put some meat in the freezer.

Just make sure not to overdo it. As much as I hate to slow down, I learned a long time ago to follow doctor's orders due to setbacks and things which couldn't easily be repaired.

unfortunately, me and overdo it are buds. First name basis if you will. I too am capable of learning though, but my wife might disagree.
Kind of the reason I didnt want the pain killers. I figure if it hurts enough, I'll take a break. There's really nothing damaged except a little hide and flesh. I didn't hit anything inside.
As Elbow said, it may turn out to be a good day anyway and she was correct. I had a new Trad shooter come to visit this morning and he placed an order for a two piece LB and got completely outfitted and then I received a call and order for a LB from a fine young gentleman from Kentucky.

Glad it turned out as well as it did. As we all know, it could have been a LOT worse. However, you really don't now how to slow down. Barb will back me up on that one. Anyway, you really must give that hand some down time. For some reason, cuts on the hands and knuckles seem to reopen with little effort. I know you got some thread on that cut, but still...slow down buddy.

Aaron Redmon ordered a cocobolo Buffalo bow. We had been conversing over email for a couple of weeks.
He had shot one at the Ky Klassic and told me he would be getting one. His parents are purchasing it for him for his birthday.

Amazing what a few stiches will do. It's still a little tender but doing very well. Doesn't seem to bother me much unless I bump it.
Just another cut in a long line of injuries. They all grow back.
BigJim
By the way here is the culprit.

This is just a small example of how quick bad things can happen. Everybody please enjoy this hunting season, and be careful.

whoa~ just saw this post. sorry that happened to you. you are having a rough year... things happen though. I've had my run-ins with the sharp things, too. "experience is what you gain the split second after you need it". Reminds me of the time I buried a magnus two blade in my thigh. Man, I felt stupid. I did not decline the pain meds, however. Get well soon, man!!

As it turned out, I didn't need the meds anyway. Has been one of the easier to deal with bad/ stupid luck I've encountered lately.
