I`ve never seen a big diamondback with an unbroken string.

Nice snake Debbie! Does it still have the original, or has it been broken off?

Killed a 7'10" (without head) Eastern Diamondback a few years ago. He had 21 and a button. a few of the middle scales were cracked but he was fully intact. His head was larger than my fist.
He was the biggest I have seen or ever heard about.

No after almost stepping on him....I was doing good to get the rattles and keep my lunch. Father-in-law took the measurement.
I was new to south GA. and had no idea what actually lived in gopher tortoise holes. I was extremely lucky that it was a very cold november day and it was sluggish.
That would have been a odd discussion with my boss of how I got a rattlesnake bite in south GA, when I was suppose to be at a "funeral" in NC. It was almost my own. karma almost got me

7' 10" rattle snake minus the head would be over 8' long with the head. I would like to have seen that because a 6' one is rare. The average size of full grown is about 5' 8". I have handled snakes a long time and attrended about 10 round-ups in south Ga and Al. Sorry I will have to see it beside a tape to believe about a 8 ' rattler.

When a snake is dead, it will stretch out considerably longer than it would be in life.
The most rattle segments I've personally seen on a rattlesnake was 22 and a button on a captive EDB that I raised from birth. It was about 7 years old or so IIRC. The largest rattlesnake I've ever personally seen (and I've seen a LOT of them) was about 7' 3" or so. It was also a captive Eastern Diamondback. I've had a few Neotropicals that were around 6 feet or so and one HUGE Mexican West Coast (Crotalus basiliscus) that was over 6 feet. They are pretty tough to get an accurate live measurment on.....

My dad killed one in Twiggs County that had 18 and a button. The snake was 6'7" without the head and poison room (Dad called it) and was soft tanned. The snake tanned was 17 5/8 inches wide. I had the hide fitted over the dash of my 1978 Jeep Commache plus had anough left for two belts and buckles that my Mom had made for us. The rattlers hung from the rear view mirror.

It's also a crock....the snake was nowhere near 9 ft or 95 lbs....good entertainment I guess, but completely fraudulent.

I've seen the pictures. They've been on the internet and emailed around ad-nauseum. If it's the same one I'm thinking about, it was actually killed around Sarasota Florida and it was 7' 3" long....and nowhere near 35 lbs, much less 95 lbs.
Ross Allen offered a reward for an 8 ft EDB (dead or alive) for 20 years or more before he died and nobody ever collected it....and he was right in the middle of big diamondback country. A 7 foot diamondback is uncommon...an 8 footer is really, really rare. There has never been a 9 footer recorded. Ever. Lots of tall tales, but no verifications. The longest ever recorded was verified by Ditmars and it was 8' 3" in 1936.
