Lanier - Screen Shots Explained

Last Saturday at Jimbo on Lanier's seminar, in my presentation, some sonar shots didn't get explained. I received many private messages on facebook to discuss and explain.

Here's a few of the pics with explanations...so if any of you were there and not on my facebook page - here's the info.

Just a note - the DI shot is a little blurry due to zooming in on my computer to give you a better idea of what I saw.

Thanks folks - LJ

I appreciate those pictures. I'm fairly new to sonar period with my Helix 5 and whatever the boat I'm fishing on has. I wonder about those fish on the bottom....
Can you describe what that timber on the second picture is?I can't picture what timber looks like based on that sonar image. Or is that the same timber as you can clearly see on the DI image?

I was sitting still on top of some standing timber coming up off bottom. Since I'm sitting still and the screen scrolls...it will keep showing the same timber. Sure - you might move a little but if you're in timber, your in multiple trees. Most trees on Lanier were topped off around 35'-40'...but a similar pic would show if you were on a good brush pile. Hope this helps -

Thanks for this post Jim. I am struggling to learn to read sonar and every little bit I can learn/get my eyes on helps :)

Standing timber - That is what's in the DI picture as well?

Thanks! Just bought my first fish finder and trying to understand what it's saying. I can identify fish as arches, and I recognize my lure sinking down to the bottom, but i can't recognize anything else in terms of cover really. It's a basic color sonar without down scan, so I can't tell what bait fish or brush or trees look like. I've mostly been relying on marking structure like ledges and humps and not cover

The pictures and video were extremely helpful for me, thanks.

I do have one question for Lanier Jim. In one picture, you point out the trees/brush, and your jigging spoon on the bottom. How are you using a jigging spoon in all that timber and not getting hung up, or are you using a light wire hook so that you can straighten it if you get hung?

First - it's not a thick as a tree in your yard. Leaves and tiny limbs have decayed...unless it's a freshly planted natural wood brush pile.

If you get snagged....a little slack in the line and just jiggle it. Most times, the weight of the spoon will cause it to get free. Another trick I do is change out the treble with a #1 or 1/0 VMC weedless wacky hook. Works great and has a great hook up ratio. Here's a couple of pictures to see the weedless wacky hook.

Hope this helps -
