walked up to about 3 feet from this guy before we noticed him. then as we were talking admiring this guy we noticed another one about a foot longer less than 2 feet from where this guy was. needless to say it was a tip toe slow walk out of the middle of the cut down

To me, the least aggressive are copperheads and canebrake (timber) rattlers.

The one that worries me regarding ill temper is the moccasin.

Great pic!

Jim, cottonmouths and canebrakes are the most even tempered and docile of all the venomous snakes we have.

The reputation of the cottonmouth is totally ill founded.

All I can say, Nic, is that I leave snakes alone and never harrraas them - but - have been aggressively pursued by moccasins on more than one occasion.... so maybe I just found the “wrong” ones.

In the lower part of SC, we have some monster canebrakes and they are as gentlemanly a snake as I have seen.

When I get nearer to water, though, my radar goes up a notch!

Cottonmouths are more curious than aggressive in my experience. They love to inspect the inside of your boat and see what you're up to.:biggrin2:

I once told a guy to stay still and listen carefully.
There is a copperhead between your feet!!!

He was wearing flip flops and still jumped like Micheal Jordan.
I then caught the baby copperhead, fed it twice and released it alive. He offered $100 for saving him from being bit and I needed it but I figured if I took the money I’d get bit one day. I haven’t seen a venomous snake in person since.
