20 years ago I heard them during turkey season on Dawson Forest WMA. I’m pretty sure they are no longer there. Also used to hear them around my house 7-10 years ago near Tallulah Falls but they do not exist here anymore. Last grouse I saw was up on War woman WMA. Used to see them everywhere driving back roads in the mountains, now they are pretty rare.

A biologist I know who is also a grouse hunter says that a practical cut off in the Southern Appalachians is 1600 ft elevation.

I've found them lower than that but not many.

Not a whole lot of them above that anymore.

I've seen them in Dawson Forrest before, but last one I remember had to have been 15 years or so ago, this was actually on the southern tract.

You can thank the tree huggers for the reduction in the Groouse population. If they allowed more logging in the
National Forest i think the Grouse population would come back.

I guess can still find them if you have strong legs and don't mind thin air. I am going to let it cool down a bit more before I go chasing them.
