Almost that time of year again. Made a few slight changes over the last two years. Switched to rabbit/chicken hutch J clips for the doors and black plastic 1/2 " inch mesh for the funnels. Easier to replace when a turtle or gator rips it out. Also i made my last 10 with the back end crimped down. This seems to lessen water resistance and doesn't get near as much debris caught on the back side of the trap in moving water. The only other addition is using two 6" long one inch diameter pvc pipe filled with quickrete. Zip tied to hold in place and then two lengths of wire twisted to hold in place forever if the zip tie breaks. I sawed a groove on the top side of the pvc pipe for the wire to sit in.
Here's a look at the 2018 version:

Hi Rip,
Don't know which Wallyworld trap you are referring to, but the only one that comes close is the Willapa Marine trap for 27.99.
My trap sits weight side down so the crawfish can't reach the bait from the exterior. Being bigger, allows a bigger bait box of my choice size, which gives the crawfish longer to find and pick at the bait. Once, the bait is gone, they will start looking for a way out, along with no more crawfish coming in. The larger funnel allows bigger crawfish( and they can get up to 8 inches long) to get in,and i have the funnel entrance covered with the pointed ends of the wire mesh sticking out so they cant come back thru the funnel. They can easily escape from minnow traps as the funnels are not very deep.
Lastly, i guess the satisfaction of using something made myself that i feel is better than anything on the commercial market for the places i use them.
