The range would depend on what antenna you are using. I have a long range antenna on my handheld and a 17" roof mount on my truck. I can get a mile out of the handheld and 2 miles out of the roof mount. Before I changed antennas I was, like you, only getting about .7 a mile.
On the handheld I have gotten a little over a mile in certain spots...sometimes 800-900 yards they drop out...but they come back quicker than the rest....on the long range antenna that's like a cb rooftop I have gotten 4 miles plus....each situation is different. .certain places on the club are totally different. ..same as cell phone service

I got 2 miles or more out of my dc40s and long range (tool box mounted 48") antenna. I also had long range antennas on my collars. I get 3/4-1 mile out of the alpha with the small antenna.

i have the 320 an dc 50 combo it came with the 14 inch long range ant
i just bought the ant roof mount havnt tried it yet
went to conkeys in hastings fla today we left collars at his shop an drove down the rd got 2 1\2 miles out of it
so im guessing terrain has lot to do with it
