Default Awesome Youth Hunt Weekend!

This is the third year I've taken my grandson Bryce and my granddaughter Josie turkey hunting on youth weekend. When Josie was six years old I called her in a nice gobbler off the roost and she got to hear him gobbling, see him strutting but she missed him with a single shot .410. Bryce had never even heard one gobble much less seen one while we were hunting. This year we applied for the youth hunt put on by the Lowndes Longspurs NWTF Chapter with Jamey Rex and I serving as their guides.

We scouted for the hunt on Friday morning prior to the hunt. Friday afternoon we headed out to the Spain Ferry Hunting Club to meet up with the group. There were several DNR officers assisting with the hunt and the kids had the opportunity to shoot at targets. Tony Reynolds gave the group some instruction on turkey calling and the DNR gave a demonstration on gun safety.

Saturday morning we went to the woods in the dark and got set up. Josie was hunting with me and Bryce with Jamey. Just before fly down our gobbler lit up the woods! Friday morning he was roosted to the left of our set up but this morning he was closer and to our right. We heard a hen yelp. He gobbled twice on the limb then flew down and gobbled on the ground. I called once and he gobbled again. Josie had her gun on her shoulder pointed in the direction of the decoy with shooting sticks helping support the gun. Then Josie said, "I see him!" I still couldn't see him. I know her heart had to be pounding as hard as mine. Josie said, "Do you hear what he's doing with his feet?" "He's a giant and his fan is up!" "I can see him but he's walking away from us" Hindsight is always 20/20. We possibly could have completely readjusted and tried to get her turned 45 degrees to the right and she may have had a shot but at the time I knew if she could see him he could see us if we moved. A while later we heard a shot and Josie said she hoped it was Bryce! We hunted until noon before heading back to the truck to meet up with Bryce and Jamey. As we rounded the corner we saw them and Bryce started running our way with his fist in the air and a smile that lit up his face "I got my first gobbler!" We were so proud of him His gobbler was a fine one with a 10 1/2" beard, 1" spurs and weighed 20 lbs.!

We headed back to camp to meet up with all the other hunters and eat lunch. Out of 14 hunters 6 of them came back with nice gobblers, a first for most of them! Bryce was the youngest of the group at 9 years old. These group hunts are really special and give the kids the opportunity to meet new friends. Thanks to Keith Sirmans and Lowndes Longspurs for the opportunity to get these kids in the woods, to Tim Hutto and the DNR for giving their time to help, to the land owners and clubs that provide places to hunt, and to Tony Reynolds for all he does to help these kids It was a wonderful day for all of us P.S. There is a day 2 that I will post shortly!

I'm so glad you brought him. He is a very special young man indeed. It was nice to see all of the kids outdoors and hear their stories whether they pulled the trigger or not. I have plenty of other places whenever you have a moment to bring him. God bless ya

We had a great time, thanks to everyone that helped put this together! We might just take you up on that before the season is over. I'll let you know how we do at River Creek

I know we ended up with 6 mature gobblers on Saturday morning. Several hunted Saturday afternoon but none were taken. On Sunday one of the youth hunters went again and got two. Bryce shot his on the Brooks county side of the Withlacoochee so it was checked in for Brooks county. If I'm correct then this hunt put on by Lowndes Longspurs would have accounted for 7 of the gobblers taken in Lowndes county and 1 in Brooks county for the youth weekend
