Default Sunday Showdown

Sunday morning my friend Hunter and myself headed out to my farm in Ware County. I had taken off Wednesday-Saturday to hunt and had heard zero gobbles my whole vacation time.

Sunday morning was different. It was very overcast, and at daybreak we had 5 or 6 birds gobbling in all different directions.

At 7:00, we had a big gobbler cross the field we were set up in, about 150 yards out in front. Didn't pay us a bit of attention. He was on a mission to somewhere, just like he has been all season, as I've seen him multiple times. Never gobbles, never responds, all by himself.

We decided to get on a bird that was gobbling about 750 yards away in another field.

We peaked out upon arrival, and there he was, about 300 yards at the back of the field.

We got set up as quickly as we could, trying not to be seen at the same time. I called & he answered and began our way, but hung up about 200 yards out.

After about 15 minutes of strutting and gobbling but no distance being closed, Hunter got out his shoot 'n skoot Jake decoy and began crawling along the edge of the field toward the bird to give him a visual. Seeing that Jake really ticked him off. I would yelp on my mouth call, and he would shake his gobble tube. We got him fired up and he started coming looking for a fight.

At this point, my buddy is belly down in the field with his deke in front of his face just waiting for him to get in range.

He got to 40 yards and I let him keep coming. Hunter turned his head back at me as to say, "Are you gonna kill him???"

He got to 30 yards & I clucked to pop his head up & pulled the trigger. He didn't even flop, just crumpled in a heap of feathers.

We had a blast, and still made it back to town for church.

I am hoping we can get on the silent gobbler and put him in the back of the truck. I have a feeling he is the boss gobbler on our farm.

(Disclaimer: Hunter was laying out in the field about 10 yards in front of me and 5 yards to my right. He was not anywhere close to my line of sight on the bird, and never had a gun barrel pointed anywhere near him.)
