Default Strange tree roots

I was out wandering around, and found a tree that had grown it's roots in an almost perfect circle, about 2' across, 10" high with a mostly flat bottom.

Interesting. My guess would be that there was an object there at one time that the root grew around.

I also thought that might be the case. The tree is only 4-6", can't say what kind though. I was so fascinated by the roots, I forgot to look at the leaves. Duh...

There are crop circles and there are root circles. Pretty simple, actually. But not very common.

I`ve seen ironwood (hornbeam) trees down in the river and creek swamps grow a root system like that.

I`m not sure if it`s a hornbeam or not. Maybe if we could see more of the tree and leaves.

We've been on this 25 acres for 8 years now, and this was the first time I've seen this tree. It might have been the last time too...
