Default The Drought Is Over

I had no expectations and it was quiet as a church mouse Friday evening. I had pictures of this guy in a bachelor group back in July and August but they split up and all disappeared mid September.

He stepped out on my right into a clover plot about 60 yards away right around 5:40 pm. I caught the sun's reflection on his antlers and that got my attention. I eased my binocs up on him and the first thing I noticed was his mass and my heart started to thump a little bit.

He was browsing on the clover but he kept popping his head up and looking right at me. He knew something wasn't right up in that tree. There's a small water oak on the edge of the plot and that was his licking branch. He worked that over for a little while and then turned broadside to me and started walking across the plot right to left and he was moving like he had a purpose.

There's a big red oak in the middle of this plot and I put my crosshairs just to the right of the trunk and decided when he walked into them it was say goodnight Gracie time. He did and I pulled the trigger. I knew I hit him right in the boiler room but he mule kicked and for a second I was afraid I gut shot him.

He turned and ran down to the bottom of the plot and cut into the woods. I didn't hear him pile up and that increased my doubt some more. I gave him a good 15 minutes before I climbed down to go look for him.

I went to the spot where I shot him and there was dark red blood on the ground so I felt good about that. There was a big patch of blood where he cut into the woods and I started feeling a lot better. There was a good solid blood trail going into the woods and about 5 minutes later I found him piled up against the base of a big cedar tree. I hit him right behind his left shoulder just like I thought I did and I got both lungs.

He's not my biggest and he looks to be a 2.5 year old but his mass was outstanding and I've passed everything I've seen for seven years now so I feel good about him. I got a bunch of meat to process and Ronnie Bulloch has his cape.

His tarsals were black as coal and he was stinking to high heaven. The rut is wide open just like it always is this time of year.
