Default Shooting Preserve lisence question

What does a landowner have to do to qualify their property as a shooting preserve and how much does it cost?

You have to register it with DNR (get a game preserve license) There are certain requirements, such as releasing so many hundreds of birds. The fee used to be around $200.00, but I haven't looked lately.

This answer of course is for Georgia, who knows what they do in Florida.

You also have to check the local zoning, if any, to make sure that it is a permitted use.

Sorry, should have specified that it was for Georgia. Does it apply only for birds or does it apply for quail and deer?

SHOOTING PRESERVE DEFINITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS



General Requirements

 Must contain minimum of 100 acres. Permits are valid only for 1,000 acres. If preserve exceeds 1,000 acres, an additional permit is required for each additional 1,000 acres.
 If land is leased, lease must be for a term not less than 1-year from the date of the application.
 Boundary line markers must be placed no more than 400 feet apart.
 Minimum of 1,000 quail or 200 ducks to be shot. Applicant must show a binding contract for required number of birds.
 Birds must NOT be removed from preserve unless bird has a tag showing the date the bird was taken and the shooting preserves license number.
 Licensee must maintain a complete record of all birds propagated, released, or taken on the preserve and must furnish to the department a copy of the records within 60 days after the end of the hunting season on the preserve.

 Unlawful to fail to notify the department within 24 hours of the diagnosis of any epizootic disease of any game bird on the preserve, including unreleased stock.
Notify: License Unit

 Pen-raised Game Bird Season: October 1st through March 31st, hour before sunrise to sunset.
 Unlawful to exceed daily or season bag limits except for pen raised birds.
 Species lawful to be propogated and released on preserve: bobwhite quail, chukar or red-legged partridge, coturnix or Japanese quail, pheasant, mallard, and black duck.


Note for shooting preserves:
If you are interested in being able to issue non-resident shooting preserve hunting licenses or any type of hunting license, contact the Department of Natural Resources, Licensing Unit at 1-800-366-2661 to become a registered license dealer.

Note for duck hunting preserves:
• Hunting over bait would be allowed for pen-raised mallards, only steel shot would be required. However, a federal duck stamp would be required for all other species of ducks. Additionally, the other species must be taken within season and bag limits and would be subject to all state and federal laws.




Private Shooting Preserve License Fee $75
Definition: any shooting preserve owned or leased by an individual, partnership, firm, corporation, association, or other entity and used only by the owners, members, and guests.

License Requirements:
 Resident hunting license required for all residents to hunt pen-raised birds
 Non-resident shooting preserve hunting license or non-resident hunting license required for all non-residents to hunt pen-raised birds
 State and federal licensing requirements apply when hunting wild birds


Commercial Shooting Preserve License Fee $150
Definition: any shooting preserve open to the general public for a fee.

License Requirements:
 Resident hunting license required for all residents to hunt pen-reared birds
 Non-resident shooting preserve hunting license or non-resident hunting license required for all non-residents to hunt pen-raised birds
 State and federal licensing requirements apply when hunting wild birds


Blanket Shooting Preserve License Fee $500
Definition: any shooting preserve open to the general public for a fee. State licensing requirements are waived for participants hunting pen-raised or wild game birds.

License Requirements:
 Federal duck stamp NOT required to hunt pen-raised mallards, but is required to hunt all other species of ducks
 Federal duck stamp required to hunt wild ducks
