Lake Russell WMA
Anybody hunting Lake Russell this weekend? I hunted there 2 years ago during Dec muzzleloader hunt and had someone walk in on me. I scouted it hard this off season. Would like to hear some feedback from hunters who frequent this area.

Ihave hunted it several times
It is great on the adult/child hunt BUT gets very crowded on all the other hunts. Alot of deer are taken up there every year.
Good luck!

there were about 600 people checked-in as of noon today.
I killed a 5 pt at about 10 till 9. I had a guy walk in on me, never saw me, but he probably pushed the deer that I shot to me. Having a lot of hunters is good in these mountains. It gets the deer moving.

Agreed about the moving part. Just don't like actually seeing the other people...makes me nervous! I had a buddy that climed up in his climber only to have somebody come to the tree right beside him and start climbing. My buddy whistled and the guy shined his light up on him and said "oh, are you hunting here?" Can you believe it? So the guy left and when it got light, my buddy saw him on the next ridge not 75 yards away. Jeez!

Lake Russell Hunt
My dad and I have hunted WMA land ever since I can remember hunting. Dad always taught me to have backup stands in place in case someone was in your spot. Scouted and had 3 stands ready. I was only hunting 11/26. Got into the woods early and got up in my tree. I could see a flashlight about 300 yards to my right. Then here comes a flashlight right in on my markings. I flashed him and he headed out (or so I thought). about 9:00 looked to my right and here comes a doe walking up the ridge about 75 yds away. Made a horrible misplaced left handed shot and only found blood at the spot I shot. I searched for two hours and nothing (thought maybe a leg shot). left the woods at about 12:00 and just about 100 yds on the other side of the ridge that guy had cleared out a spot on the ground and smoked a pack of cigs (what a waste - why even hunt). went back at 2:00 - guy comes walking down behind me talking on a cell phone, he finally left. about 4:00 3 buzzards land in a tree on top of ridge - i then realized that I had killed that doe. got down and searched till dark - nothing. on my way out the guy on the cell phone got in a tree just over the ridge and the guy on the ground came back and smoked his pack of cigs in a different spot.
THERE IS 18,000 ACRES!!!!!!
IF YOU WALK IN ON SOMEONE - THEN LEAVE THE AREA. - GO TO YOUR BACKUP.
IT BOGGLES MY MIND THAT I STILL SAW DEER!
