I think I fall into this category. I go every chance I get, skip parties on the weekends because I want to get some sleep for the morning hunt, hunt before class/practice/games, all that stuff. This isn't just turkey hunting though, its all hunting.

I don't have a place to hunt nearby, but I go home every weekend and hunt, and spend the whole weekend in the woods when I am home for any season.

If I don't have work, I'm in the woods. I worked nearly every weekend for 4 months leading up to turkey season so that I didn't have to work any during season. I hunted 5 days last week and still squeezed class and work in between.

Looking at next spring I may not be so lucky though...

I'm an 18 year old senior in high school and I would have to consider myself a serious turkey hunter. I gave up part of my Spring Break at the beach to take a boy hunting on Youth Day. Then, against my mom's discression, I gave up being valedictorian by taking choosing not to take any classes first or second period. Now, I get up every morning and hunt them until I have to go to class at 11 and then come back to hunt them by 3. Life is good

There are a lot of serious young hunters out there. When hunting is in your blood it develops into a way of life, not a hobby. Serious hunters sacrifice a great deal of things to spend time in the woods.... Its easier to do this when you are young and do not have a wife and kids to take care of. I am 25 and I have a dog and a job to keep up with. My dog likes hunting more than life itself and my job involves farm/timberland investments....AKA hunting properties. I have yet to find a girl that can put up with how much I hunt. If I have, then I must have been thinking about deer or turkeys too much to realize it. In college (AUBURN), class was not a obstacle in my hunting agenda. I scheduled my classes around hunting seasons..During the rut and mid April....5-6 consecutive days of skipping class was not uncommon. Over at Auburn, rut was more popular than spring break..or so it seemed. I sacrificed my GPA for a box of beards and 5 shoulder mounts....and a rap sheet of misdemeanors that resulted from having too much fun at times I did enough to get by in the classroom while devoting my life to the woods. This was not the most responsible approach to school but its the one I took. Yes, I was a "C" student......thank goodness

So there ya go......I gave up GF's, my GPA, friends that did not hunt, and anything else imaginable.... just to hunt. Amazing as it sounds......I had/have several close friends that gave up more than that. Its scary what a man will do in order to hunt. I am certain that there are a bunch of guys on this forum that can relate to many of the things I have said, especially if you went to Auburn. There arent many campuses around where you can let out a lone owl hoot in the stair well and have 8 or 9 different people gobble from above and below....a few of which might have respoded instinctively

Most everyone on this forum can be considered serious hunters. If you ever think you are more serious than anyone...you are wrong...there is always someone much more serious ....and so on and so on.

I consider myself a serious hunter I guess. I'm much more serious this time of year bc turkey hunting is my thing, but all throughout the year I give up several things to go hunting. Parties, GPA, spring break, etc. I actually haven't done anything but turkey hunt my last 7 spring breaks. No need to be at the beach when I could be in the woods. Even though my GPA is lower than it would be if I didn't hunt, hunting has also kept me out of a lot of trouble I'm sure. It's kept my from partying every weekend, and even during the week. And I have met some awesome people while hunting and have made some life long friendships. So I think it definitely pays off for your GPA to slack sometimes as long as you are passing your classes....my mom might not agree though

You guys re dedicated and that is awesome. As you have all said it is great that you hunt as opposed to some poor alternatives. Just remember though that your GPA is what will ensure you have a good enough job to hunt them hard when you are 50.

My 2 cents...

Absolutely. I was simply confessing to a lack of self discipline due to priority issues. Fortunately, I got away with it but I am lucky. There is a difference in serious and being plain stupid....I know lots of guys that got these 2 things totally jumbled and they are paying the price now.

I am 27 now and since i was 16 and old enough to take myself i have hunted a least 5 to 7 days a week for the last 11 yrs. Even with a wife and 6mth old i still manage but i also missed spring breaks and proms so i could hunt and now pushin 30 and a family i do not regret at all and no amount of money could buy it back i am glad i did it. the memories and experience stick to ya unlike the ones you would not remember from spring break or prom night if you know what i mean. Us younger fellas are the ones thats got to keep this stuff alive because if you are like me very few people my age know nothing about the outdoors. Yall are on the right track Go huntin heck with the real world its screwed up anyways

I agree got to take care of the priorities I stilled managed to get a college degree in 4yrs and take care of my family i just think that if you have a hobby it needs to be constructive and to me there is no better hobby than hunting it keeps the kids out of the trouble they would have been and out of the house.

A lot of what has been said sounds very familiar. I only know a few guys that hunt a lot like I do. My remaining friends are either too lazy to go, or just don't have it in them. They are recreational hunters, whereas I am a devoted die hard hunter. If I'm not hunting I'm atleast thinking about it.....its a disease....but I love it.

Spring semester is definitely not good on my GPA. I use summer and most of fall to boost it back up again though.

Good Thread.

I'm a serious hunter and still consider myself to be young..........

Hunted with Mr. Bobby's Dad in Texas- he's 70 and still a young man. He can cover ground just like a 20 year old too.........

I hope to Turkey hunting til I can't walk anymore. Here's hoping the rest of you will too!!!!!

Good Luck on the rest of your season!!

Cool thread I always wonder how many young guys are out there that are seriously getting it done. I've got prime property less then 15 minutes from home that I grew up hunting, which makes it too easy not to go as much as I please. I sacrifice a lot in the social aspect of it, but I would not have it any other way. Having a few good buddies that have properties all over the place and are just as tore up with it as you are also helps the addiction.

I look at it as a sickness . I have hunted them hard since I was 11 years old . I work as a paramedic ( 1 day on 2 days off ) so I can hunt more . Everyday I am off I spend the whole day in the woods if my chores are done . Most of my buddies think I kill most animals out of luck but the fact is if you spend enough time in the woods and dont educate the animals something is going to happen . I have seen 10 kills and 5 misses this year and I dont consider myself a pro or even close but if it gets in your blood you will never be able to shake it !

I think im under it too. Im 18 years old. I can't hunt to much on the weekdays because of school and the occasional homework comes around. But I do hunt the mornings and afternoons when I can. I have been hunting with my dad since I could walk, but I couldn't start to carry my own gun till I was 14. I'm ate up with it hard.

im 23 and this is my 10th season killing turkeys. Work and my son keeps me from being in the woods as much as I used to hunt, but I still get to hit the woods a few times a week. Not as much as Id like, But I have to keep my priorities in line. Hunting turkeys is my passion, however its not all that there is in life. I Can hunt for a few months, but I cant neglect the things in life that I have all year.

i am/was. i turned 27 a week ago friday. i have hunted since i was 5 and have had some wonderful hunts since then and taken some great animals in my 22 years of hunting. i regualarly hunted before school fall and spring and then in the afternoons after school/work, heck i would plan negotiate with my boss my schedule on the days i was out of school but working so i could hunt before work. i was fortunate to live on the land we owned that covered 1000+ acres of river swamp. i stayed in it almost every day of my life until i got married and moved. i am still in and out a lot now, but have other great places that i divide my time among now as well. i have hunted since i was 5 when i killed my first deer. hogs---man, waaaaaay too many to count and prolly knocking close to 50+ with a bow that would go 250+lbs as well. they turkeys took me a little longer to get. my dady only hunted a handful of times for then and killed one on his first hunt and that was bout the extent of it. he did go with me when killed my first two jakes...two in one shot. i was hooked waaaaay before then though and have been ever since. i have had my mother come in the woods blowing the horn trying to gt me to come ot so she could take me to school on time. we had a 79 cj 7 jeep with a 304 that we hunted in and i learned to drive it very early and that became my way to the woods. i could get up and be gone before anybody could stop me most of the time!
i didnt go out much til late in my senior year, but nothing got in the way of my hunting or fishing in the lake in the swamp, bu i also had a good time in the "after hours".

waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too many good time were had in our swamp in my younger years to even try and remember them all. that is where i grew up, learned to hunt/fish and a lot of other very valuable life lessons were taught by my grandfater and my dad over those great years. now things are a little different, but the memories are still there and i cherish them all.

Man, glad to know I'm not the only one. I didn't hunt turkeys much in high school, but all through college I've been obsessed. I once showed up at a final exam wearin my camo and boots because they decided to schedule my exam on a Saturday. Last year I wasn't in school and was laid off from my job. I was broke but in heaven! I hunted 4-7 days a week all season long. Wish my huntin buddies were more like you guys; they party too much to get up most weekends. Good luck with the addiction y'all!

If 25 fits the category I'm in. I personally don't think I hunt enough, but if you asked my wife or anybody I know they would roll their eyes. The older I get the more attached to it I am. I took a couple days off and found out my job might look at days off as why to cut certain people. I killed a turkey and had one of the best mornings ever in the woods and thought to myself "if I lose my job over this it will be worth it." Call me crazy, call it a sickness, but it is a lifestyle that grows and grows. If I could spend every day in the woods I would be happy as a cricket.
