Default Why does some of our law enforcement do this?

I am not bashing all LEO's just some of the dumb ones! I see this on a regular basis, and can't find any email for the GSP to send this too. Hopefully another LEO can point this in the right direction. I had a friend with me to take this the other morning on the interstate at 70mph. This is just an accident waiting to happen when the little old lady at the front of the pack hits her brakes or when a deer runs out.

I may be old school, but I was taught the rule of thumb to driving is at least one car length for every 10 mph. At 70 mph that is way to close for all of them.

the LEOs do that around here too, at night they'll ride your tail and lighty go from left to right in the lane. i think they are trying to get the person infront of them to mess up.

Traffic looks pretty light for the ATL area........Maybe he was running the license plate of the car in front of him

I had one "draft" me a couple of years ago just south of Forsyth. I saw his blinker come on for the exit, so I got off too and flagged him down.

Asked if I needed to wash my tag so he could see it better. He looked at me like I was crazy. Then I told him that if had been any closer to my rear end, I would have invited him to listen to my radio and that I didn't appreciate it.

You could tell he didn't like getting his own medicine, but to his credit he apologized and drove off.

I would be pretty irritated if I was a cop..
Everyone drives about 5 under the speed limit when youre around. They ride peoples bumpers out here and when they finally get around they take off flying

They do the same thing around here, ride your rear bumper like , get outta my way ! Then they suddenly dash around you like they are in a road race or something ! I like what MudDucker said, at least he confronted the LEO for bad driving behavior ! Law enforcement always instructs people not to tailgate,,,guess it doesn't apply to them !

They have the brush guards on their cars, I think it's legal to tailgate if you have a big bumper.
If you are in the left lane and traffic comes up behind you, there are two options-get over or get on down the road.
(Slower traffic keep right), not i am driving the posted speed limit in the left lane.
If someone catches up with you in the left lane you should have gotten over before they caught up with you and thought that they would have to push you down the road.

So people with bigger bumpers are allowed to bully people with smaller ones?

Well I for one am not too fond of double standards, if we tailgate a leo what's gonna happen? He will probably slow so you pass then write you a ticket for following too closely. I have had bad experiences with deer jumpng out in front of me and will not hesitate to use my brakes.

You are a LEO, and yet you see no problem with 70 MPH with a car length or less between you and the other car. I gurantee if he hit the brakes the SP would not get stoped w/o incident

I would not use the deer trick with a big rig behind you. It could be the last trick in your bag.

I was leaving Atl. on 75 south 55 mph zone doing about 70 mph, there was a cop with me and five other autos behind him, some moron tooling around in the left lane in a panel van, with traffic going around on the right.
The cop throws the blues on the van and the van merges over into the right lane and we all go our way.
I wish he would have given the van a ticket for obstructing the flow of traffic.

"Only morons ride in any lane with traffic going around them on the right side."

First he's not an Leo he's a parole officer big difference second the only reason I can see for him doing that is he's running the tag or trying to get them to move so he can get by

My favorite story was seeing a Sheriff (not even in his county) on the highway. He was crusing doing 55 in a 65 limit. EVERYONE was behind him doing 55. Went past him doing 65 with no issues... Not a single person got out of line to speed up. What's with idiots?

I haven't seen any speedlimit signs that say 65, 40 in presence of law enforcement.

Probably just not paying attention just like the cars in front of him. They are doing the same thing despite the fact there is a marked patrol car behind them. Its the number 1 cause of wrecks for a reason.

he's doing it because he can! I watched eight gsp go through fairmount a few months ago going 55mph nose to tail right by the local police setting there running radar. I slowed down to 35 because I know they will bust you there in a heartbeat. Why do politicians lie, cause they can. He can do it because there's no one to stop him.

I do believe he's doing the old, slide up behind em and push em out of the way without turning on the lights trick, for whatever reason they don't have to give, double standard thingy....

The next time they're on your behind, watch em real close because in this town, they're running your tag and when they take off like a rocket, it means they're moving on to look for the next target.

Default What would you prefer?

I am a police officer with a take home vehicle.

While on the highway to and from work, if I give plenty of room and go slow, other traffic would accuse me of abusing my authority and going slow just to make everyone else go slow.

If I speed up and get close to the vehicle in front of me, and get on down the road so that other traffic can do the same, I would be accused of abusing my authority and going fast just because I can.

Which would you prefer? No matter what I or other officers on the road do, we are wrong.

Go with the flow of traffic but don't ride the bumper to do it. Thanks for what you do as an officer.

If you really need to know, my iPhone was plugged into the charger and the cord won't stretch from beside steering column to the passenger seat. So yes they were leaning over near the console to take the pic. I will try and get that window taken care of for you though.

I just retired from Florida as a Deputy and also had a take home car. I rode 12 hour shifts and was one of the few who "worked" the whole shift normally clocking about 200-250-miles a day... The previous poster is right you are in a no win situation most of the time. If your on your way to a non emergency but urgent call (no blue lights) but you are expected to expited...then everyone sees your car and hits the brakes blocking you in traffic. I used to flash my headlights, guess what caused nothing but problems, try to squeeze up to grab their attention and most driver's panic slow even more...talk about frustration. No it gets better go on a real emergency call with lights and it's just about the same worse in the blue hair state I've heard of incidents where old folks had heart attacks because of fire trucks or ambulances going or trying to pass...

Bottom line ....cops are people too, there are good ones, average ones, and really bad ones. But then again so are the people behind every other line of work.

Last thought.. a true story= bank robbery in progress shots fired at deputy ....I haul you know what to help out twenty miles away heavy traffic in construction zone. I manage to get there (no crashes, no one gets hurt, no damage to my car) the bad guy gets pack him off to the ER. I didn't shoot him otherwise it would have been the morgue We seize his gun, and two bombs.. guess what next day back to work 4 of us get called in on the carpet for going too fast....

I asked the Captain, How fast do you want me to come when you get shot at? Still got paper. I'd do it again.

I seen that happen just a few months ago one night

There was a trooper in an unmarked Charger two vehicles in front of me doing the speed limit on a two lane highway. This lady was riding his rear REAL close and finally she passed him on a double yellow .........he immediately pulled her over

I had to laugh.

One more parting shot, I know the training that the Trooper has had, Obviously it doesnt give the right to violate traffic laws, but I feel more comfortable with him then with some "do gooders" taking pictures going down the road.

1. Why do police officers get take home vehicles? It's not authorized for me to take a state government vehicle home unless it's for official business only.

2. I don't get that 2nd part. If the speed limit is 100 MPH and you, the LEO, doing 50 you bet your butt I'll be doing 100 MPH past you. Never seen a code section that states you're breaking the law for passing a LEO vehicle legally. People are stupid sometimes.
