Go through to hide your known turkeys from other hunters back in the good ole days! Dustin_ Horne's thread got me to wondering about it!

If I killed a bird that other folks were hunting I would never, never, tell them I killed him. That way they could spend a few days hunting the "dead bird" while I moved on to greener pastures. Around my neck of the woods they still talk about the legendary "Airport" bird and wonder what happened to him. He fell to a load of 6's and his beard hangs on my wall. Also, covering up strut marks in the road, coming in from another way so people could not follow my truck tracks, etc,
And during turkey season you would avoid any other turkey hunter within 3 counties. Never go to the hunting/fishing store or local cafe. Go straight home from work, never wear your camo in the truck even if you were going hunting!!! Heck, I would hardly speak to my preacher during hunting season.
Come to think of it, I still do a lot of those things!!!!!
This post brought back some memories, some of the things I listed are true, some fabricated. And I will never tell which ones are what.

"Back in the day?" Heck, I still hunt like that. No sense giving up birds you've been watching all year. But I will help out newbies and point them in the right direction.

I have been known to send people that were hunting to the wrong side of the property to give me some room to work a bird, or say that I haven't heard birds when I have to keep someone from moving in on me, but I try to help people who I'm not competing against on the club.
There have been some other things throughout the years, but some are better left untold.
and I'm by no means an 'old-timer', I'm just getting started good after 9 years!

Back in the day, was not a problem. Never even saw another person in camo in the restaurant in Talbalton. Rare was the time almost any time of day you couldnt do a single note owl hoot and not hear more than 1 gobble.

I am guilty of covering tracks - drag marks - and my own boot prints.

If someone comes in on a bird that I was hunting first, I put breast and neck feathers in the road or trail on the way in and put a spent hull in the road 25 yds or so from it and scratch out the leaves or straw from the tree that the bird would have been shot from.

All the above I have done. My favorite is killing a bird to watch someone else hunt it for a week before he figures out the bird is dead. Pretty classic old skool move right there.

Short version: I lie....................a lot but at the same time people think I'm a super nice fella for helping them out. I do have a couple buds I'll share information with. Some of it is even factual.
I'm not an old timer but I've hung around a couple.

I have blindfolded folks both in out of a hunt. But heck, today you also have to frisk them for a GPS.
