Tell any well-meaning family member that tries to put it in the dishwasher, that use of certain limbs could be limited afterwards.

Hot water, NO SOAP, heat it up, wipe w/oil.

Way back in the day I simply wiped my mothers skillet with oil and stuck it in the oven after she had washed it with hot SOAPY water.

Lard. I lather it up and put it upside down on a hot grill. Repeated if needed.

To clean I dump Kosher or pickling salt in it, rub it around, rinse with hot water, light coat of oil or lard and stick it in a 200 degree oven for 30 or so minutes and let it cool in the oven.

My cast iron is pitch black and sliiiiiiiiiiiick. One of the skillets is roughly 90 years old and in excellent shape after I got it away from a family member who never took care of it.
