Default Am I the only person here that continues

to shoot the so called "cheap" rifle bullets?

I have used Remington CoreLokts PSP and the Winchester Powerpoints in 243, 270, 30-06 and 7mm-08 for many years now and have never had them let me down. They have been to Saskatchewan, Canada and other states and have always performed nicely on Whitetail deer.

Reading the gun and shooting forums nowadays, it seems like everyone is shooting the 30.00 to 40.00 box of bullets such as Noslers, Accubonds, Ballistic tips (BTW, my opinion is Ballistic Tips is not very high based on using them for one season - never again ). Anyway, I am going to Texas this winter and talking to the hunting camp guide recently, he told me NO Ballistic Tip bullets and highly suggested the Corelokts from Remington or the Hornady Light magnum as the brands of bullet to bring on the trip.

After seeing what the core lokts did (or did NOT do, is more accurate) in my .25-06 I switched to the Ultras and the difference was just undeniable. Yeah I hate slinging $1 a round shots but considering how little I shoot now and what's on the line when I do pull the trigger, I'll GLADLY pay it.
If I ever get back into shooting more, I'll start reloading.

I use Rem's 30.06 165gr CoreLokt's and have had nothing but the best results with them. The price went up $3 this years but still a bargan at $13.99 per box at Walmart.

Also use the CoreLokts in 30.30 and .270....same results.

I still shoot factory rounds as well, but I have no quams with the BT's. They have been great on every deer I've shot.

I was having problems with Ballistic Tips. About 4 years ago I started using Core Lokts and every deer I have shot with them has dropped like a rock.

I think that as long as you keep impact velocity reasonable...around 2700 fps, the old standbys should work great on deer. I like the 180 grain CL's for my .30/06.

I use Remington Core-Lokt or Winchester Power Point if they shoot well in my gun. Whitetails are not that tough so a premium bullet isn't really needed.

I used to love the Core-lokt......until I had 2 to fail, it made rethink them. I changed to the comparable Winchester and have not had a problem. I will say that the times the Core-lokt worked, it was quite impressive.

I've used the Winchester 120 gr. PEP (Positive expanding points) in my .25-06 for twenty years or so. Not a single deer has said they could have been shot deader.

Tried some of the expensive ones, couldn't see that they did anything better, dead being dead and all that, and several were substantially less accurate. I'm thinking of the Hornady "Light Magnums" in particular.

You ain't alone at all. I have loved good ol' Remington Core-lokts for years. In fact, those were all I'd shoot up until about a year and a half ago when I bought some Hornadys for grins. I like them, too.

My Grandfather has handloaded 180gr Sierra's in a .308 at about 2300fps for 40 years, over 400 deer shot with this load in the family...yes it'"slow" and I will see people tell me that they would never do that...he has NEVER lost a deer shot with this load. I have shot several and they just fall apart. That said, I shoot 180gr Corelokts in my 06 and have not lost one hit with this load either!

I have shot Rem RN core-lok bullets in my 06 forever....
So happy with them I bought a bulk box of 500 about 10
years ago...Use them for hunting only....
Use Sierra in my 44mag, and 7mag...
I reload all my ammo with very good accuracy, and good
results on deer...

Default Older fellas know the older ways

I used Remington and Federal 200 gr. RN cartridges in my .35 Remington Marlin lever action, when I was young. Never lost a deer.

Moved up to handloads -over 30 years ago with Hornady RN 200 gr. bullet.

Last gunned deer, handloaded 165 gr. Hornady SP in 30-06.

I do get some great sticker shock when I see some of these super-duper high tech factory loads.

Sometimes I get real ancient and use a round ball in a .50 caliber flintlock rifle. Round ball was good enough for Daniel Boone. Those fellas had to know how to shoot and where to shoot.

Young modern hunters have to know advanced technology.

Me too,in my 300, 30-06, 308, 30-30, 270. I also use the Federal 100 grain partitions in my 243, They tend to shoot best on that particular rifle

Core-Lokts in .30-30 for me. When I get another type it will be the Hornady LeverEvolution bullets, but they're only about $22 a box for the 30-30...

And when I get a bolt-action, I'll still use the Core-Lokts, but the higher-up choice for me will be the Hornady Custom-Loaded Barnes TSX bullets.

And, if I find any, I will grab some of the TSX bullets for my 30-30 as well.

I've used CoreLokts in my .30-30 as long as I can remember, and they've never let me down. That said, I bought a box of the LeverEvolution this year, mainly out of curiosity. I will admit, the ballistic tip did pattern slightly better at 100 yards Saturday, but for the price, I'm hunting with my CoreLokts!

My brother used to think that the more expensive bullets were "better". He used the "Silver Tips", and "Ballistic Tips" and other $25 to $35 per box shells for his .270 and 30.06, but I convienced him to try Remington's CoreLokt's one day and he's been a believer ever since.

His shots were not doing what they should at closer ranges..... say, 35 to 75 yards, and the deer were running off. He even lost a couple with what he swears were well placed shots..... Good blood trails tapering off to nothing. We're thinking that the high dollar rounds were over penetrating at the closer ranges, not really sure. But since the first day he switched to CoreLokts he hasn't lost a single deer and they haven't ran more than 50 yards or so.

Default been reloading since 1968,,,,

first qualification is 'accuracy' and of course it has to be a bullet intended for large game [deer] whether factory or custom aftermarket. I like Silver Tips, Power Points, etc.
I STARTED using EXPENSIVE game bullets only when I started loading the .250 Savage in one of several Ruger 77 bolt rifles. It was for my son's first deer hunt,,and I loaded Nosler Partitions 100 grain since I did not want to take any chances. Also, I've shot a good many deer and hunted/tracked many deer shot by others. I WANT TWO HOLES in a deer because of a much better chance of leaving a good BLOOD TRAIL in case the, for example -lung shot deer, runs more than expected. I've had deer run with NO blood trail until they dropped and then bled out a lung full of blood only where they finally stopped. Even a 100 yard 'run' after a killing lung shot can make tracking hard if no blood trail.
I'd say 99% of bullets, factory or aftermarket, get blamed for what really was a POOR SHOT PLACEMENT. I've seen many a hunter look at his 7mm Rem Mag back in camp and say,,,I don't know what happened, this gun's supposed to have lots of power. {It does,,and a pine tree beyond the buck he shot at knows it }.
Got to put that bullet in a good spot on the deer.
Testing,,and MORE testing at the bench to be sure you ARE sighted in, and your load is capable of at least game accuracy [doesn't HAVE to be a 1/2" group,,a 1 1/2" shooter will do fine].
I am presently shooting a .250 Savage Ackley Improved - a Ruger 77 Mark II I installed a Shilen Match barrel on. Loaded some Speer 100 gr Jacketed Hollow Points AND some Nosler Ballistic Tips over the SAME powder/primer/case, etc.
At 100 yards off a BENCH REST,,5 Speers went into a 2 1/2" group. Thought something was wrong with my powder/load,,,whatever. Then shot the 5 Ballistic Tips. All went into 0.35"! A retest did the same. This particular setup just does not like the Speer HPs. Possibly could change this or that,,but I only loaded the Speers because I had them around, not that I was going to hunt with them.
It just shows that testing should be done well before you climb into your stand.
I'm going to change from the Ballistic Tips in my .250AI,,I think I want a more penetrating bullet for Two holes. It's worked ok in clearings, but I think I'll change for brush areas,,not that I hope to hit any!
