I got a registered fiest that is right at 1 yr old. Took him out yesterday for the first time since I got him a few months ago. I have had alot of skwerl dogs over the years, and some good ones, to me anyways, and then health reasons made me get out of it. Had a buddy of mine tell me it is easy to get out of having a good dogs. It is alot harder getting back in !! This little guy made 3 trees in short time we were out. I saw 2 of em. Little feller didn't want to leave the tree !! He is definitely using all his sences, eyes, nose on the ground and winding. Also, I had him hunting in front of the truck in just a few minutes of working with him with the help of my Ladner !! I am very excited about this pup !

You better watch them little feist, them things will win you over. I like all of em, curs, feist and hounds. I can honestly say every feist I've owned , I could kill squirrels with by the time they were 6 months old. Their smart, they think. I love a good cur too. Good luck this year !

It's nice to see a young dog doing that they are bred to do. It wont be very long until the weather cools off some. Don't take long to break a sweat.

Around 3 weeks now ! I am going to take these pups !! I don't like them treeing without being able to see !!

I don't do much squirrel hunting before November/December. I'm thinking of giving it a go early in the season. Where is the best time/place to locate them early in the season? I won't be using a dog. Is it better to sit in one spot or walk in the early season.?

These fellers are talking squirrel dawgin ... If you just want to shoot a couple squirrels, just take a 22 and go sit in a deerstand for a hr or so. There is always squirrel activity.

They will be all over. In the oaks, hickorys and pines !! You can find what they are cutting on by the cuttings ya find laying around under the trees ! Once ya find the cuttings, just set down and listen. Using a .22 with all they leaves on the trees is a challenge !! I really like hunting hickorys when they are cutting in them !!

A full choke .410 is good squirrel medicine when the leaves are on. Later its the .22 for sure.

Shotgun for early season works best, hard to get that shot with .22 , like other said look for the shavings under the tree. Hickory trees are a pretty good bet!

Love those little feist. This past March, I had to put down my squirrel hunting buddy that had been with me for 17 years. Dixie was her name. She is the best, by far, of any squirrel dog that I have ever hunted with. We traveled many miles in the hardwood hill sides and bottoms of south Georgia. Killed MANY squirrels. I am 73, but I am here to tell you, she was in my arms when my Vet have her the shot. I took her to a Petuary and had her cremated. When my time comes, her ashes will go in my casket, never to be separated again. Also, I cried for 2 weeks. Still think about her every day. She also helped me train my present little feist, Pat. Pat is very good, but she is not as good as Dixie. My grandson, age 9, and I go squirrel hunting with Pat almost every weekend. He loves it just like I do.
Honestly, I really should not have ever had a dog. I get too attached. They are like family to me, and when one of them gets hurt or passes, I grieve just as if it was a family member. Whomever coined the phrase, "a dog is a man's best friend", knew what he was talking about. But, with that being said, I will have a little feist as long as I am able to put one foot in front of the other. Just a few more days, and me and my grandson will be after them again. Much luck to my fellow squirrel hunters and feist lovers for the coming season....
