Big caliber Hog hunting in the CNF

Am I the last to know that you can hunt hogs in the CNF with big bore guns until Feb 28?

Probably not. But it has been legal for years. Those hunters that take the time to read the reg book cover to cover have had all kinds of little advantages like that. It's a fun game each summer to find out what has changed. Just imagine what else you don't know is hiding in the regulations.

yup...called furbearer season...or squirrel season with a muzzle loader/shotgun or rimfire. This weekend might be a good one to be in the woods. I'll be on the lake myself....my feet hurt!

I knew about muzzle loaders but GW said 308, 300, whatever you want to use. Reread the book and it is any center fire above .17 caliber. For bobcat and fox until Feb 28th.

You are correct. That was adsed in on the last regs cycle, and it really slipped up on us. Somebody brought it up here on the forum, and for most of us, it was a moment of total revalation! I couldn't believe that change had slipped by me. Also, you can hunt wma's during their furbearer season, and now most all WMA's have a furbearer season unless it is specifically stated otherwise in the regs for that specific WMA. I called the Gainesville WRD office TWICE just to make sure I was in the right. I was walking around Chattahoochee WMA that January with my .308 just feeling like I was about to get a ticket! Ha! I did manage to take one in Feb with my .308 on Chattahoochee, and I was glad to ne able to benefit from the new regs change! I'm REALLY glad DNR added that change. Really opens up hog hunting opportunities for the general public!

Does this apply to WMAs or only on NF land? My local WMAs are small game until Feb28th. Doesn’t mention anything in the regs about furbearer season, but I assumed it is rolled into small game.

It is, unless your wma says no furbearer season specifically in the regs, you can hunt fur bearers ( or hogs!) During small game dates. Most all wmas are open for it

I got one for you guys !! If I am squirrel hunting WMA, can I carry a big bore side arm, without a carry permit, in case I stumble up on a pig !

Only if it has a fox & bobcat season. And without a permit it would have to be treated and transported same as a rifle. see (loaded weapon; weapon restrictions for small game & furbearer firearms) page 12 in connection with (hunting feral hogs & coyotes) page 40.

Look under Pinelog WMA for the no fur bearer hunting verbiage if you do not see that you should be good to go but you will need to have small game season or some kind of date indicating there is a season current.....for wmas.

CNF isn’t a WMA?

BUT... Hunter beware - there are WMA areas IN the CNF, so do your research for the specific area of CNF you'll be in.

■ CHATTAHOOCHEE NATIONAL FOREST (outside of WMAs)

FERAL HOG Baiting is prohibited. No night hunting. Hogs may be taken with archery equipment during archery deer season, with deer weapons during firearms deer season, with turkey weapons during turkey season and with small game weapons during small game dates. Feral hogs may be hunted with dogs with appropriate weapons restrictions while training dogs during dates when training season coincides with small game or turkey season.

Went to Cohutta recently, to see if I could find some of these pigs. There were signs up saying construction and no vehicles allowed on the road up toward Grassy/Conasauga. Had an area in mind up there I wanted to try and go to. Or atleast get as far as I could up that way. Oh well. Had to park lower end and hoofed it a few miles in and never saw any sign other than some old deer rubs and a little bear sign. First time hunting cohutta and spent about 7 or 8 hours. By the time I got back to truck I was exhausted lol, I finally understand what some were talking about when they didnt shoot something just because of the drag back. Seemed like getting down some of those hills was as slow and a pain as getting up them. Also Loved getting to the top, finally, just to have to all but crawl through a thicket or two lol. Maybe I'm just getting old:). Thinking the next trip will be an over nighter. Takes some time getting back in there. Looking back at my map I jumped in around holly creek gap close to check station and made it almost "halfway" to the lake, tried staying away from the roads. No trouble sleeping that night lol
