Use the "Search" feature on here and I'm sure there are a number of threads on that topic. There are also several on keeping shad alive once they've been netted.
 
One piece of advice is to be very careful when netting bait this time of year. If you're netting off of a platform in your boat be very careful with ice on the deck or a wet deck and falling in. I've netted bait at a lot of different lakes on a few striper trails in the winter time and I knew a few guys that wound up falling in. Not a good deal this time of year, especially if you're by yourself.

For bluebacks, I've heard a lot of guys say that a sabiki rig is the way to go. Look in to that as well.
