Awesome backstory you provided. No doubt those bears will take the wrong side of the ridge/mountain. Your dragging it all the way is accomplishment in itself.

I always carry a small 6 x 8 blue tarp in my pack. Weighs almost nothing, it's cheap, and has many potential uses. When its time to drag out I wrap the animal in the tarp and wrap up well with cord. Makes dragging so much easier. Also keeps the meat clean, protects the hide and keeps flies off.
