Where was this millipede? I've never seen them that big in person. Was it out in the open? Every time I see one it's always under rotting wood or under a big rock.
The woods here in the Smoky Mountains are full of big ol' millipedes of several different colors and kinds. This one was close to 6" long and more than finger-sized around. They just crawl around all over the woods, especially when it's damp, which it usually is. You can pick them up in your hand and shake them, and they smell like maraschino cherries.
That one is huge! Love seeing them try to curl up when you touch them!
