Cutting down Pine Trees

I had a friend who had some pines cut down for free. He said the guy did it for free because he had a truck-load. He thinks 10-12 trees. The deal was the guy would drop the trees, but he had to clean up the mess (branches) himself. Does anyone know someone who will cut down pines for free, and what the minimum number usually is?

I dont know anyone, but my neighbor got his cut on that plan and it still looks like a war zone over there ! they even dropped a gigantic pine across my driveway and barely missed both my cars and pulled all the power lines off of the house they paid for the repairs I had to stay here and make sure they didnt leave untill the power company got here ,make sure they have insurance !!! now my driveway is cracking where that tree hit and they are long gone . there is a lot of work to be done when they leave get your work boots and gloves on!!!!!

i've got a guy coming to take 8 pines down at my house next week. it ain't free. $2200 to cut, clean up/haul off logs, chip the mess and grind the stumps.

i got 3 quotes. all about the same. i trust this guy because we have worked together. let me know if you want his info.

Sorry to hear that. Not to mention having a neighbor who doesn't feel obligated to keep his yard up. I understand the cleanup that would be needed, and I'm not the type of person to leave it there longer than I have to. I'm not a lawyer (hence not having the money to have the trees cut down), but I would have thought your neighbor would have been responsible for a tree on his property falling on and cracking your driveway regardless of how it landed there.

Well, if they know how to cut down a tree safely (unlike bobos neighbor's crew) and are insured, that's all I care about. I imagine there are plenty of loggers out there that could cut a pine and have it fall on a nickel. I can handle cleaning up branches to save $5,000-$7000.

a logger can cut it down but they are use to just cutting and letting it fall where it may

I know a couple of foresters that told me if you can stand in one spot and count em it aint worth bringin in a crew.

Like some said it can be a gamble but is it possible to come out just fine with an honest and reputable logging crew. We had 30 some odd taken down on 1 acre some years ago. These loggers were careful and honest and they wouldn't touch a tree if as much as a twig was going to fall on the road, property lines, driveways or anything like that. They even got me a great deal for the remaining higher risk trees (6 or so) by splitting the profits with a tree service they knew of. I only had to pay about $350, if I recall, for those.

If I recall the head guy's name was Eugene Stubbs in Macon, but probably too far from you. This was 15 -20 years ago also.

You will not likely find anyone today who will cut down pine trees for free, unless there is another aspect that will enable him to recover his cost plus a reasonable profit,

If the pine trees are of sawlog size and quality (12' in diameter at breast high), and having a sufficient number of trees to make at least one trailer load (approx. 20 trees), then with luck you might find someone.

This assumes that a logger could with relative ease get his equipment in and out of the area. If there is a great deal of liability
(power lines, buildings, fences) associated with your proposal, I would say forget it and get ready to spend some big bucks (bonded tree specialist).

Scavenging loggers likely are very busy already considering the amount of tree damage associated with recent storms.

Just for the record, individual pine trees such as you describe could have a value of somewhere in the range of -$500 (note the minus) to a value of $50 per tree. The $50 trees would need to be in the range of fifty years of age.

Never let anyone cut down trees in your yard without both General Liability and Workers Comp Insurance!!! Use aTREE SERVICE with good refs from your area. Dont take there word, get CI's from the insurance co and check to make sure they are current! If you cant afford it, you would be safer letting them stand! I have seen some nightmares.

Ply logs are bringing 30$ per ton right now and pulpwood considerably less. With fuel at 4.50$ a gallon it is not really worth it to haul any wood less than several loads to the yard. If you do find someone I would be suspect of their operation. If they do agree to do it for the wood they will leave a mess like you've never seen.

All I can say is prayer works. Several years back our house on this red clay hill was being shorted out all the time by lightening strikes in the trees around the house. I new I had to do something when we had a tree about 30 feet from the house took a direct hit one night and when I check the damage the next day there was a small ditch from blown up dirt heading straight across the drive and toward the house. Couple days later while riding my mower an older black dude came by and said he'd cut down all my pines and pay ne $900 a load. Took longer than expected cause his loader busted a hydrolic hose. He dinged the heck out of the largest oak on the property at the base, he cut down my best cedar tree inside the woodline and I think he jipped me at least one load. But he piled up all the limbs in a central area. Time has taken care of the stumps. In the long run there were never anymore ruined TV's, answering machines, video players or the bulbs blown in the chandleir. And I did get $4500 out of it. But that was just my story.
