Fast growing?

Recent years I have simplified, just planting BFOs, yet this year I may need to rethink. We have had no rain in months. The last time I waited until October, my plot was green, yet low, not offering much forage. Cold nights hindered it from growing. This year, is the same. Planting this weekend assuming rain next week. What type of seed will jump quickly before it gets cold?

I'd go with wheat (or cereal rye if you prefer) and if you expand your horizons, crimson clover as long as you get moisture.
