Started on a buddies farm, today got a roost gobble to lil hooter. Went towards it set up, couldn’t buy a gobble. But listened to it and 4 others, hammer to crows and geese, wood peckers and owls. I was 150yds from nearest bird, they got down heard hens start up and got hit with total silence. I sat there for 2 hours, just softly clucking and yelping on an AGE XT. Zero responses, these birds been having a tendency to end up in my buddies lil food plots. He just mows, them haven’t been planted since he moved in. I went for a walk, found a strut zone. Walked to one end, cutt and yelped on a green slate, walked to the other cutt and yelped on a ceramic, walked into the middle, broadcasted as loud as I could with the AGE some hard clucks and yelps. Stuck a hen out and got settled for a deer hunt. Let it all settle 15mins, pulled the age back out couple soft clucks, boom double gobble, I proceeded to call in 5 birds with no shot due to the brush. They saw the decoy, didn’t like it vacated that strut zone to a hard wood ridge, I hit em with some soft yelps they hammered. Weren’t spooked, just didn’t want to finish, I slipped down to the next clearing, ended up calling in a lone bird strutting and gobbling but 80yds up the hill wouldn’t budge, watched and listen to him drift up into the timber where I could still hear the flock talking. I pulled out the ceramic pot, and cut out on his field road, every 50/60yds I’d pour it on and let em rip. I moved straight line away from the birds, for 350yds. I was on the bottom of the ridge, they were up at the top. I cut up the ridge, to there level doubled back 80yds. Callled, 150yd gobble, I got the gun up and went ghost. They gobbled, 100yds, 70yds, 50yds, they came off that ridge and it was 3 longbeards in a group. 40yd shot, and my season was over. They wouldn’t gobble, till they fired off to that trumpet, once they started they didn’t stop. Just a 2hr game of cat and mouse bunch of set ups, then the old hen leaving trick.
