Food plot - Grass - Question

Stupid question here but here it goes. Everyone says that grass provides zero protein for deer. But if deer seek out specific foods that they know are beneficial to them then why are they always on the side of the road eating grass..???

Many times it is certain weeds they prefer.

Forbs, weeds, clover ...... that's mixed in with the grass. They will eat grass, if there is nothing else out there for them, but it's not the healthiest option for them.
