Heat treated chert?

looks like agitized coral by the look of the cortex ....

It does have a coral-ly look to it, but it's a long ways from home if it is. I'm guessing maybe heavily heated Flint River butterscotch.

the cortex is what made me think coral ...
 
It's not corral. Laurens county has several chert outcrops. This is one of them that has been heat treated. You can work it raw but you had better eat your Wheaties and bring out the big moose! Intolerant of mistakes but when you are through with it, it looks like there is a 5,000 yr. old patina on it. Fooled a couple of archaeologist friends of mine and I wasn't even trying! takes heat treating well and still retains reasonable strength.
