lens for nikon d40

Hey guys, at christmas my mom gave the wife her old nikon d40. Wife has been using it more and more and has expressed the want for a lens she can zoom in with.

I know NOTHING, zilch, zero, nada about cameras. Where do I start? Whats a decent one to get?

Once you decide which lens you want there are numerous places to purchase them. Used lenses on craigslist, ebay, KEH, etc. New lenses from Amazon, B&H, Best Buy, etc. depending on how much you want to spend.
