So it could be a genetic trigger and not totally environmental?

Scrapie was first discovered about 250 years ago and proliferated from inbreeding sheep for improving wool. In that case, sheep were unknowingly being bred for genetic susceptibility to scrapie. In more recent years as we became aware of the disease agent, transmission, and genetic link they were able to start breeding away from it.

Unfortunately for deer, all whitetails can get CWD and will die from it if infected. Some just die from it quicker than others.
