We got us a half a dozen new traps, and I tried a new prep method...

To start with, it was Purple Stuff and a pressure washer, and then a dip in plain old white vinegar.

You really could almost watch em rust, and after about three days, I dyed them this morning. A dip in Zep, hot outta the dye and here ya go...

I think they came out real good!

I've painted mine before and it works well, but if you don't let them air out for a couple of weeks and completely lose the paint smell, you'll be dealing with digging coyotes. I learned it the hard way.

If you want to use traditional logwood dye and you don't want to boil them, you can mix some water and dye in a 5 gallon bucket and let the traps sit in it for a couple-three days and they'll take the dye as long as they have some rust on them. If you're not really pressed for time, this is easy and works well. I've gotten to where I like this method better than painting them so I don't have to deal with the odor.
