Just put my new AR10 in 308 together and was looking at scope options and wondered if anyone had experience with this scope. I honestly will probably never shoot it over 300 yards.
If your primary purpose for this scope is hunting, and your shots are less than 300 yards, I would put your money towards better glass and optical quality, and drop the idea of ballistic reticles. I think sighting in for MPBR, is a much better tool, than ballistic reticles, for shots under 300 yards. Sight in to maximize your distance, and aim "dead on" at your target.
Also, personally I prefer capped turrets on a hunting scope, because with exposed ones, there is always the chance of your turret getting bumped and brushed against things, and accidently getting moved and causing your point of impact to be changed.
As far as the Nikon scope, IMO there are much better choices to be had, for just a little bit more money. I don't want to come off sounding like I'm bashing a brand, but your asking for opinions, and I'm just being honest. I've owned 3 Nikon Prostaffs, and had problems with 2 of the 3, and ended up getting rid of both of them. My experience with the warranty and customer service was disappointing as well.
As far as the magnification, I love the 4-12X for the type of hunting I do. Otherwise, I would recommend 3-9X or 3.5-10X. I would buy a Leupold, Bushnell Elite, Vortex, or Meopta.
