Old Compound Bows

Recent thread about a Bear bow prompted me to look at
my own "old bows".....Been on the bow rack and mostly
unused for 20 yrs because of a elbow problem...

Bear/jennings hybrid called the Pro Specialist and a PSE
Jet Flight express overdraw bow.....

Got them cleaned/oiled and decreased the draw
weight/reset tiller and tuned the Bear bow and started shooting it !!!

Gonna try to work up to 60 lbs and use the PSE for bow
season this year.....

Not really interested in buying a new bow for 4-5 weekend hunts this year.....

Anyone else got "Old bows" that are still serviceable ???

The Bear bow is still deadly accurate and 2-3 arrows are
bending shafts if i use the same aim point...

I have a Martin Cougar Magnum that is in like new condition that I purchased sometime in the mid 80's. I haven't gotten it out of it's case in over 20 years.

I still have an old Bear Kodiak Special. When I bought that thing compound bows were illegal to hunt deer with in Georgia.

I have an old Black Bear with the round wheels that I haven't shot in a couple decades. It killed deer 30 years ago, so it would still kill one just as dead today.

My oldest bear compound had four round wheels. Two on the limbs and two on the riser. You turned the riser cam to adjust the draw. Got it used in the mid eighties.

I still use a pse cobra. I love the older ones. I still use aluminum arrows too. 100 grain muzzy don't care what she's threaded on to. Proofs on the wall. I've never been a sucker to these modern times.

Still have my old PSE laser I bought new in 79. Stopped hunting with it in 2009. Still shots.

Even have the Wing reserve I bought new in 74. Still shot this one for fun.

I still shoot an old bow from the mid-nineties and aluminum arrows. Like you, I have killed, and continue to kill plenty of deer with it. I have nothing against modern times and I thin a lot of the new bows are great, I just can't bring my self to spend a grand plus on something I will use a handful of times a year, and it has not let me down up to this point. It is kind of like a truck, a new one is great, I just have no interest inlaying for a new one when my current old one still runs.

In the original thread someone specifically asked for help placing a cash value on a 40 year old Bear bow. A perfectly useable item may still have little to no cash value anymore. I think it also becomes a safety issue at some point. I had a ancient PSE Nova come apart at full draw. I still have the scar.

Bingo. Re string them when they need it, and you should be good to go. I dont shoot mine often. I only pull it out right before bow season to make sure shes dialed in.

I still have a Bear Whitetail hunter my father got for me when I was 10, so that bow is............... old.

I still have the bow I shot my first deer with - A Bear Whitetail II. It's slow but still shoots.

My current hunting bow is a 2008 Bowtech General and is still the quietest bow I have ever owned. The new stuff out there just has not been better IMHO.

My first compound bow

was a Carol Archery Products target bow. This would have been around 1980. Slow as Christmas and only had a 30% let off but I could drive tacks with that thing. Unfortunately it got stolen in a home break in (lost my guns as well). I would dearly love to get that one back just to shoot 3d with if nothing else.

I got a Martin Mag Cat II that I believe is a 96 model
I had it restrung a couple years ago and I enjoy shooting and hunting with it.

I have a Browning wooden compound with 2 round cams. Can't remember the name right off.
I also have a PSE Jet Flight express. This was my favorite hunting bow until a riser cracked.
I then bought another Browning. This was a Pro Shop model with really nice mossy oak camo. Pretty pricey too. It too is stored away with a broken string.
Shoulder problems have put an end to my bow shooting it seems. I've got a set of X rays if I ever go see a Dr. about it.

have a PSE phasor purchased in '82 .. a jennings carbon extreme purchased in 92? .. have a pearson pride purchased about 15yrs ago that I KNOW will never be any better .. only pulling about 60 lbs, but a vicious killer -- can't remember all the deer we've drug out
i really can't imagine replacing this one

I’ve always given mine away to some less fortunate kid that I know may use it ! Very rewarding when u see them and they tell u about a deer they shot or even missed , especially when I know it would probably only collect dust if I’d if kept it !

I’ve always been a PSE guy and have two now. Was in Macon a few weeks ago and found an Elite z28 2010 model. Lady sold it to me 150 bucks with nice quiver and nice fall away rest. I couldn’t resist this even if it was an older bow. It shoots really good. I know it was an elite flagship bow in 2010

I have a Browning Xcellerator, bought it back in the mid to late 70's had an old pendulum style sight on it out to 30 yards was deadly, brother had the same bow and his cracked while shooting it about 15 years, he sent it back to Browning and they replaced it with a comparable model since that model was no longer made. I see on EBAY these sell from $100 to $200 depending on condition
