The first weapon that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread was a lever action 30 30.

Up until the 80's that was definitely the case, everyone I knew owned or hunted with a 30-30, then for about 10yrs or so it seemed the Rem 742 was all the rage, that faded out fairly quickly though, as they didn't hold up well to much use.
