When their tail is closed up lots of feathers overlap. Whatever caused the damage could have got several at a time.

My bird had them randomly throughout the entire fan. Not just a select few and no pattern I could find. Simple overlap could have happened but certainly doesn't describe the entire picture.

It's from bird shot. Maybe yours, maybe the last guy to shoot at him.

The first gobbler I ever killed had similar "cuts" in the tail feathers. :huh:
 
That is from gobblers fighting. You ever see them go round and round pecking at each other. That is cut from the beak of a bird clamping down and ripping it off.
