Finally getting around to posting a pic from the last trip visiting my dad, I couldnt belive these grouper numbers were still holding fish. It was a spot we found years ago while running about 30 miles to the SE of PCB.

This was the second trip, we didnt run as far but no legal Gags. The spot we caught the mangroves was one we built.

They definatly are, thats the beauty of natural bottom, weather and time doesnt have the impact it does on man made spots.

We sold the business in 08 but we had a research boat for many years , in the beginning we did a little bit of everything. Eventually we started working for the Navy base in PCB, during our downtime we built reefs for private parties as well as different municipalities as well as state projects. Eventually we were under contract year round, between that and new regs we stopped doing the reefs. There was a guy that put packages together for people to build reefs and used us as the ones to do the work. He had a contact in Alabama that had over 1k chicken coops so a lot we did was chicken coops for snapper, 2 cabled together, usually side by side but we did some on top of eash other. Some guys would bring all kinds of stuff and we would prepare it to pass the Coastie regs, cranes, hoppers, silos, you name it ive sunk it. Most of those spots from back then are gone as the hurricanes would move them or get buried over time. There are a few that are still around or at least parts of them. Between 98 and 05ish we probably built over 1k spots. Most trips would be around 200 coops so that is 100 by its self. This is what they looked like, we had to remove the fiberglass sheets.

No problem, it was a lot of work but it was pretty cool to help build some habitat. Anyone who spent much time around the Panama City area in the 90's - 08 has seen the boat. We were always anchored right off the beach or towing a sonar/sub around the area, it was a big blue 130ft steel hull boat with red and white stripes at the bow. The guy that owned it before us that we worked for before we bought it from him was Mr. Davis that had the head boats at Capt Andersons.
