I think you'll be pleased with your decision. Yes, go ahead and try to get control of your weeds and grasses now. Plan on putting a nurse crop of either wheat, oats or cereal rye, at around 50 lbs per acre, along with your perennial white clover.

This year, to help the cereal grain you'll use and give the clover a little jumps start, you can use whatever fertilizer is readily available to you. The cereal grain will love the nitrogen and also give the clover a little foot hold. Next fall, plan ahead and have your local feed and seed place, get some 0-20-20 on hand for you. Lots of places with do that for you, given enough time for them to get it in.
