Sunflower question

This is likely a pretty dumb question, but do sunflowers actually fall or "shed" from the head of the plant once dead and dry?

Not for a really long time. If the deer haven't eaten them, the heads stay intact through most of winter - what makes them attractive to birds.

The deer left them alone, until they flowered and then they hit them pretty well and may still be. There's plenty of tracks in them.
I didnt figure they dropped. I didnt know though and wanted to ask
